Starting June 26th, the now famous Shark Week is back on Discovery channel for a week of documentaries about the ocean's notorious predator.
This is a very anticipated week for shark fans. Since its launch in 1988, the event has acquired quite the reputation among the scientific community, and regular TV viewers alike. It is one of the oldest programs of the channel, and one of the most successful.

As its name suggests it, it's a week filled with programs about the ocean's deadliest predator. Given the large international reach of the Discovery Channel, Shark week is aired in 72 countries.
The event came to life thanks to researched who wanted to protect the fearsome fish and change the perception that films like 'Jaws' had on the public. The documentaries aim to present sharks in a different way to change people’s opinion: they are social being just like us.

Despite the common misconception, sharks are far from the deadliest animals on the planet. On average, they are responsible for 10 deadly attacks per year. Lions and elephants kill both respectively 100 humans per year, and surprisingly the hippos is responsible for the death of about 500 people per year. On the other hand, crocodiles are, as expected, higher in the ranking with 1000 deadly attacks per year. The most dangerous species on the planet is actually also the smallest - insects such as flies, worm.s and mosquitoes are the deadliest due to their high potential at transmitting diseases.

This year, the angle of approach was to present compartmental behaviours of the sharks that have never been studied before.
